createdequalslide-2LSU Libraries and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church are collaborating on a closing event for the Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle  program, which will feature a panel discussion of the films shown in the Created Equal  series, including Signpost to Freedom: The 1953 Baton Rouge Bus BoycottSlavery by Another NameFreedom RidersThe Loving Story; and The Abolitionists.  This event will include clips from all five films and a discussion of the major themes raised by the films.  The panel for leading the discussion will be comprised of:

  • Dr. Rachel Emanuel, Southern University Law Center, Moderator
  • Dr. Albert Samuels, Department of Political Science, Southern University
  • Dr. Joyce Plummer, African and African American Studies (LSU), Adjunct professor
  • Vincent Brown, Jr., LSU student, Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church
  • Ashley Cornish, Youth Dance Ministry Leader, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church

The films in the series have been consistently educational and thought-provoking and have revealed a number of themes related to America’s civil rights struggle, including the personal courage displayed, different strategies that were used to effect change (and some that weren’t but perhaps should have been), and the diversity of thought and involvement in this struggle.

Event organizers hope you can attend and participate in what promises to be an engaging, thought-provoking, and entertaining event for continued understanding and appreciation of America’s civil rights struggle.
